An update on location, location, location.

In November of last year, I wrote a blog about the folks at Zet’s who took over a Derry Road restaurant, just north of the airport. It was a dubious location, where multiple enterprises have failed over the last decade. After my first visit, my thoughts were “I think they did it right and will be a success. It’s well marketed and manned and I believe their attention to detail will make the difference in keeping their doors open and their business prospering. Time will tell.”

It appears, 9 months later, they indeed have made it a success at a location where previous endeavours have closed their doors in short order (no pun intended). Execution, consistency, financial resources and experience in the industry, were able to overcome a long history of failure. As important as the right location is, the right people with the right thinking can overcome hefty obstacles.

It’s something to keep in mind for any of us in the job we do or the business we run. Doing it right can take you a long way. It doesn’t have to be over the top, as long as it is above average…even a little bit and consistently so.

Congrats to Zet’s on Derry Road for turning a sow’s ear into a silk purse. A job well done!

“The lead in the TV show ‘The A Team’ used to say ‘I love it when a plan comes together’. In my opinion, there is no better feeling and it’s definitely something we can all aspire to.”

Blog Power – 6 Tips for Success

Over the last couple of years we’ve had a few customers try to initiate updates for their own company blog. I’m afraid the success rate has been less than terrific. In all cases, it was well meaning and they all understood “Blog Power” could organically increase their rankings on search engines. Those increased rankings would then translate to increased traffic to their websites and more sales opportunities. Still in the majority of cases, these blog efforts failed.

When I was a kid in small town New Brunswick, the local barbershop and corner gas station were the places where the old timers got together to share their stories and lessons they had learned. That time is far behind us but the modern day blog serves a similar function. Here are a few tips:

  1.  Set up a regular time, twice a month, 2 hours to start, where you sit down to write your blog. I recommend using your computer over pen and paper.
  2. Look back at your week. What happened? What are 3 or 4 things that made you think or required problem solving? Pick 1 and start writing.
  3. Write anything to start. Get the flow going. Writing is a muscle that needs to develop and will strengthen with use.
  4. Remember, you’re sharing a story, not saying how great your company is. It’s a lesson you’ve learned that others may appreciate. It’s expressing an opinion on something of regional or national significance.
  5. Lists are a great way of communicating thoughts and a popular blogging approach. If you are knowledgeable on a subject, creating a list that highlights elements of that knowledge is a good way to go.
  6. At the end of the day, it is writing your take on something that might be of interest to a larger group and hopefully creating further discussions on it.
